POPE JOHN PAUL II'S TEACHING ON THE DIGNITY OF THE HUMAN PERSON

Abstract
Pope John Paul II. has devoted his teaching to the metaphysical significance, mystery, and dignity of the human person. According to him, the most important debate today is being played on that level, because the evil of postmodern times consists a kind of degradation of the fundamental uniqueness of each human person. This disintegration must be opposed by a kind of recapitulation of the mystery of the person. Among all other earthly beings, only a man or a woman is a person, a conscious, loving, and free being and, precisely for this reason, the «center and summit» of all that exists on earth. This talk will present Pope John Paul II’s teaching on the dignity of the human person as the most precious possession of an individual, because value comes not from what a person has ever possessed, as much as from what a person is.

ELŻBIETA OSEWSKA – Full Professor of Theology, a habilitated Doctor of Theology in Pastoral Theology and Family Pedagogy. (In Poland according to German system after getting PhD the next level is Habilitation, she got it in the field of Religious Education.) Working as a Professor in the University of Applied Sciences in Tarnów and the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Kraków. In 1990-1993 she was a lecturer in educational centres in the former USSR. 1993/1994 postdoctoral studies at Oxford University. 1995-2015 - an academic of the Cardinal Wyszyński University in Warsaw. In 1998-1999 the Head of the Family Affairs Department in the Prime Minister’s Office in Warsaw. A member of the Polish Accreditation Committee and International Accreditation Committee, Équipe Europea di Catechesi (EEC), the President of the Polish Familiology Association, a member of the European Forum for Religious Education in Schools (EuFRES), an author of 220 publications in the field of pedagogy, RE, catechesis, pastoral theology and family studies. Visiting lecturer and an organizer or participant of numerous conferences and congresses in Europe, Asia, Australia (inter alia, Australian Catholic University, Melbourne, Charles University in Prague, KULeuven Belgium, Malta University, Oxford University, University of Ljubljana, Centres in Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani University Tibilisi, Institute in Fort de France, Martinique).

Papa Ivan Pavao II. posvetio je svoje učenje metafizičkom značaju, otajstvu i dostojanstvu ljudske osobe. Prema njemu, danas se na toj razini vodi najvažnija rasprava jer zlo postmodernoga vremena sadrži svojevrsnu degradaciju temeljne jedinstvenosti svake ljudske osobe. Ovomu se raspadu mora suprotstaviti svojevrsnom rekapitulacijom otajstva osobe. Među svim drugim zemaljskim bićima samo je muškarac ili žena osoba, svjesna, koja voli, slobodno biće i upravo stoga »središte i vrh« svega što postoji na Zemlji. Autorica u radu predstavlja nauk pape Ivana Pavla II. o dostojanstvu ljudske osobe kao najdragocjenijega posjeda pojedinca, jer vrijednost ne proizlazi iz onoga što je čovjek ikada posjedovao, koliko iz onoga što čovjek jest.

ELŻBIETA OSEWSKA redovita je profesorica teologije, doktorica teologije iz Pastoralne teologije i obiteljske pedagogije. (U Poljskoj je prema njemačkom sustavu nakon stjecanja doktorata sljedeća razina habilitacija, stekla ju je u području vjerskoga obrazovanja.) Radi kao profesorica na Sveučilištu primijenjenih znanosti u Tarnówu i Papinskom sveučilištu Ivana Pavla II. u Krakówu. Od 1990. do 1993. bila je predavačica u obrazovnim centrima u bivšem SSSR-u. Akademske godine 1993./1994. pohađa postdoktorski studij na Sveučilištu Oxford. Od 1995. do 2015. predavač Sveučilišta kardinala Wyszyńskog u Varšavi. Od 1998. do 1999. šefica je Odjela za obiteljska pitanja u Uredu premijera u Varšavi. Članica je poljskoga Odbora za akreditaciju i Međunarodnoga odbora za akreditaciju, Équipe Europea di Catechesi (EEC), predsjednica Poljske familiološke udruge, članica Europskoga foruma za vjersko obrazovanje u školama (EuFRES), autorica 220 publikacija iz područja pedagogije, vjerskoga odgoja, katehetike, pastoralne teologije i pastorala obitelji. Gostujuća je predavačica i organizatorica ili sudionica brojnih konferencija i kongresa u Europi, Aziji, Australiji (Australsko katoličko sveučilište, Melbourne, Karlovo sveučilište u Pragu, KULeuven Belgija, Sveučilište Malta, Sveučilište Oxford, Sveučilište u Ljubljani, centri u Singapuru, Tajland, Filipini, Sveučilište Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani Tibilisi, Institut in Fort de Franceu, Martinik).
