THE HISTORY OF SALVATION IN THE HISTORY OF THE CROATS ACCORDING TO JOHN PAUL II
IVAN BODROŽIĆ

Abstract
John Paul II in his addresses to Croatian pilgrims in Rome or on his travels, often emphasized various details from the history of the Croatian people, encouraging the Croats to be proud of their own history. But he never emphasized some events from heroic history only, but always those decisive events from the so-called sacred history, that is, the history of faith. In this sense, he referred to the Christianisation of the Croats and to later famous events and situations in which the Croats defended and preserved their religion. In this way, John Paul II observes to what extent the history of the Croatian nation is integrated into the history of salvation of the God's people, especially through communion with the Catholic Church. Moreover, he very clearly points out how vitally important was the connection with the Roman Church, led by the bishop who is the Christ's vicar and the Saint Peter's successor, and as such the head of the entire Christianity. Observing the history of the Croatian people as «sacred» history, John Paul II encourages the Croats to be aware of this themselves, in their history not to observe only a series of events, but to look for the roots that go back to the God's roots and the God's plan, and from such observed history to draw strength for the future. Moreover, not only for the temporal and earthly future, but for the eternity.
